Courage & Co. Ltd - Acquisition and Closure Trail
- They acquired the Alton Brewery Co in February 1903 with 77 tied houses. Courage required the brewery for the production of pale ale.
- They acquired the Camden Brewery Co. Ltd in 1923 with 78 tied houses. Brewing ceased here in 1925.
- Farnham United Breweries Ltd were acquired in 1927 with 196 public houses. Brewing ceased 1928 but malting continued until 1956.
- In 1930, they acquired Noakes & Co. Ltd with 120 tied houses and closed their Windsor brewery the following year; the site was used by Courage as a depot until 1952.
- They acquired C N Kidd & Son Ltd's Steam Brewery, Dartford in 1937 with 65 houses and brewing ceased. The brewery was demolished in 1939.
- Hodgsons' Kingston Brewery Co. Ltd were acquired in 1943 and brewing ceased September 1949 but bottling continued until 1965. The Kingston Brewery was demolished in October 1971.
- Merged with Barclay, Perkins & Co. Ltd in 1955 to form Courage & Barclay Ltd. with about 1,250 houses.
- Merged with H & G Simonds Ltd in 1960 to form Courage, Barclay & Simonds Ltd. The Bridge Street brewery (Reading) was demolished in 1983.
As Courage, Barclay & Simonds Ltd:
- Nicholson & Sons Ltd (Maidenhead). Acquired by Simonds Ltd in 1958 and closed 1961. It became the Nicholson Walk shopping complex.
- In 1961, they acquired Bristol Brewery Georges & Co. Ltd with 1,459 tied houses. The Bristol brewery was closed in 1999.
- Clinch & Co. Ltd (Witney). Acquired 1962 with 74 tied houses. Ceased brewing 1963 and the brewery was mainly demolished ca.1979.
- In 1962, they acquired Harman's Uxbridge Brewery Ltd with 83 tied house and 5 off-licences. Brewing ceased here in March 1964.
- Charles Beasley Ltd (Plumstead). Acquired 1963 and brewing ceased 1965. Brewery demolished.
- Star Brewery Co. Ltd (Eastbourne). Acquired 1965 with 43 tied houses. Brewing ceased 1967 and the main brewhouse (built 1876) was demolished in 1971.
- Hole & Co. Ltd, Castle Brewery, Newark, was taken over in 1967 with 220 houses. Brewing ceased here in 1983.
- They acquired John Smith's Tadcaster Brewery Co. Ltd in 1970 with about 1800 houses.
- They acquired Plymouth Breweries Ltd in December 1970 but closed this brewery in 1983.
