Founded 1871 as wine and spirit merchants. Thompsons never owned a brewery but from 1932 they brewed at Hartley's Brewery, Ulverston, under the supervision of their own brewer, this continued until June 1968. Before 1932 they had brewed at Heath's Brewery and also at the Whittle Springs Brewery, Chorley, Lancs, in which they had a 1/3 interest. Acquired by Whitbread & Co.
