Meux's Brewery Co. Ltd, Horseshoe Brewery, Tottenham Court Road London WC1.
Founded prior to 1764. After a dispute amongst the partners of Reid, Meux & Co, Griffin Brewery, Sir Henry Meux left the concern in 1807 and acquired the Horseshoe Brewery. Registered August 1888. Brewing was transferred to Thorne Brothers Ltd former Nine Elms Brewery in 1921 and this renamed the Horseshoe Brewery. The former Horseshoe Brewery was demolished in 1922 and the Dominion Theatre now occupies the site.
Takeover Trail:
- Burge & Co. Ltd of Windsor were acquired in October 1931 with 53 houses and brewing ceased there in 1932
- William Rodwell (Tring)'s estate was acquired in 1935
- Mellersh & Neale Ltd of Reigate were acquired with 94 houses in June 1938 and brewing ceased.
Merged with Friary, Holroyd & Healy's Breweries Ltd in 1956 to form Friary Meux Ltd. Brewing ceased at Nine Elms 1964.
In 1814 there was a fatal accident involving a burst vat. Read more at the following websites:
