MW, Dorset, Nov 2006 My Husband worked for 36 years at Watneys Isleworth and would like as much information as he can get on the history of the site and of Watneys in general they were a marvellous company who gave us a good life. There are two books you can try and find: The Story of Watneys (WP Serocold) 1949; The Red Barrel (Hurford Janes) 1963. Unlikely to be in local libraries, but should be available through inter-library loan. Watney records are held at the London Metropolitan Archives in Northampton Street. |

AB, Nov 2006 I am trying to find some information on Beards Brewery or memorabilia. I have been on the Sussex council site but not much info really. I know they went into partnership with another family. Are they still brewing from a microbrewery or has it ceased? Beards closed their brewery in Lewes in 1958, and for many years had their beer brewed by neighbour Harveys. After operating as an independent pubco, they finally sold their pubs to Greene King in 1998. |

SP, Oct 2006 I am attempting to put together a history of the Thorne family for my sisters and my own family. My grandmother had told us that her family owned a brewery in England and I think they were the original makers of Toby ale. This part is speculation on my part. The name or location of the brewery is unknown but I think it might have been owned by Thorne Brothers. That is a name that comes up in copies of old wills in my possession. I would appreciate any suggestions you could make as to where I might look on the internet to find out more about this brewery or if it even existed. It would have been in the 1850s and perhaps your records don't go back that far. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thorne Brothers (p86 in Century Plus), located at 41 Nine Elms Lane, Vauxhall, London SW8. Founded in 1833, acquired by John Mills Thorne in 1841. Registered in 1898 and acquired by Meux in 1921 who brewed there until 1964. Records at the London Metropolitan Archives in Northampton Street. |

JD, Sep 2006 I am trying to find info on a family member who may have worked for Walkers Warrington Brewery. Is there anyone who may have records or archives relating to the 1930s who I may contact? Possible places to check are either the Chester or Preston Record Offices. We did deposit material there after the Allied dispersal, but can't remember if this included the period mentioned. Tetley Leeds would be a possibility, but unlikely. |

BC, Aug 2006 I am trying to trace an old family brewery in Kings Langley who sold out to Benskins I believe in the early 1800s. The brewery was called Groomes Brewery. I know the old main brewery house still exists in Kings Langley but would you have any further info? Try and find the book Brewers in Hertfordshire by Allan Whitaker pp162-7 which gives coverage. |
