Mitchells & Butlers Ltd Smethwick Alum Rock, Alum Rock Road Brookhill Ex M&B, Cape Hill. By G B Cox of Harrison & Cox for M&B, opened January 1928. A goldmine for M&B defunctabilia! Modern etched glass in front windows and two doors with 'M&B' and deer leaping trademark. Five rainwater heads with 'M&B' vertically. Post sign on frontage - probably original - with lovely two-sided sign, possibly enamel: 1930s pictorial scene and lettering: 'THE BROOKHILL' and 'MITCHELLS & BUTLERS'. The front bars have fine ceilings with moulded beams: the central bar beams have numerous examples of 'M&B', deers leaping, and drinkers with foaming tankards! Holt Brewery Co Ltd Birmingham Aston Cross, Corner of Lichfield Road and Rocky Lane Golden Cross (former) Over the Rocky Lane entrance, a splendid terracotta roundel with a squirrel at the centre encircled by 'THE HOLT BREWERY COMPy'. Ansells Brewery Ltd Birmingham Aston Cross, Corner of Lichfield Road and Rocky Lane Golden Cross (former) High on the Rocky Lane elevation is yellow lettering in script style with neon illumination: 'Ansells Ales'. Holt Brewery Co Ltd Birmingham Aston, Witton Lane, corner of Trinity Road Holte Hotel A large carved stone panel with 'HOLTE ... 1897 ... HOTEL'. Sitting above a central shield is a squirrel cracking a nut. We had thought that this was Holt Brewery's trade mark, but it turns out to be part of the historic coat of arms of the Holte family who formerly owned the land. The pub was owned by Flower's Brewery of Stratford-upon-Avon, then M&B. BHK photo 2013 Picture

Mitchells & Butlers Ltd Smethwick Balsall Heath, 527 Moseley Road New Inn Etched windows on the ground floor with 'MITCHELLS & BUTLERS LIMITED' in a roundel. In the centre of one is a crown illustration with 'TRADE MARK' and 'ESTd 1781'. The other has a 'deer leaping' illustration with lettering "DEERS LEAP" and 'REGd TRADE MARK'. Facing the car park, a 'NO PUBLIC RIGHT OF WAY' sign with 'MITCHELLS & BUTLERS'. Google in 2011 indicated that the M&B features had been removed. SP 2003; WRB photo 2007; Google 2011 Picture

Mitchells & Butlers Ltd Smethwick Birmingham, 150 Newhall Street Queens Arms Edwardian corner pub with an exceptional ornate tiled sign in art nouveau style on the curved corner splay with lettering: 'MITCHELLS AND BUTLERS GOLD MEDAL ALES' plus a scroll with two medals: 'EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE 1889' and 'MITCHELL & CO'. There is a similar style tiled sign above with the pub name and a crown symbol (an early trademark). Also two oriel windows at first floor level with flamboyant etched glazing including 'M&B Ld' monograms topped by crowns. Two hanging signs topped with 'deer leaping' symbols. Relatively modern M&B fascia board signs with deers leaping. A refurbishment in 2009 resulted in the removal of all M&B signs except the modern fascias (the pub is owned by pubco Mitchells & Butlers). SP photo 2006; SP 2009. Picture

Mitchells & Butlers Ltd Smethwick Birmingham, 275 Corporation Street King Edward (former) Fascia - relief lettering - 'WINES AND SPIRITS MITCHELLS & BUTLERS GOLD MEDAL ALES AND STOUTS WINES AND SPIRITS'. The arch on the corner door has two fine 'M&B' monograms within scroll work. Built in 1905 to a design by Wood & Kendrick. Pub closed for many years, although the upper floors have been converted to flats. In 2020, the M&B fascia was obscured by modern fascia boards. BL 2003; SP photo 2005; Google 2020 Picture

Ansells Brewery Ltd Birmingham Birmingham, 322 Summer Lane Barrel 2003: etched window - Ansell squirrel. 2006-2007: no sign of an Ansell squirrel on the exterior windows. The windows are replaced by modern ones, incorporating relatively modern leaded panels inside; there are leaded representations of a squirrel in some of the panes, but these are not corporate Ansell's or Holt's versions. Davenport's Brewery Ltd - formerly John Davenport & Son Brewery Ltd Birmingham Birmingham, 34 Horsefair White Lion (former) A James and Lister Lea pub of 1896, built for Davenports. One of the gables incorporates a panel with 'JD&S' (John Davenport & Sons). The other gable has the building's date. Now used as a restaurant and night club. SP 2003; WRB photo 2006 Picture

Butler's Crown Brewery Ltd Birmingham Birmingham, 36-37 Broad Street Crown Hotel (former) - currently Reflex Formerly the home and tap of William Butler's Crown Brewery from 1876 until his merger with Henry Mitchell in 1898. The pub existed first (1781), and the brewery was named after it, taking the 'crown' as its trademark. The fine exterior has a clock tower with cupola and a prominent 'crown' on top. Also roundels with crowns high on the west elevation, and above an unused front door. SP photo 2006 Picture

Holder's Brewery Ltd Birmingham Birmingham, 47 Upper Gough Street Craven Arms Alterations were carried out by Holder's Brewery in 1906 to the designs of Arthur Edwards, when a magnificent tiled facade in shades of blue and gold was added. Above the fascia are two large tiled panels in blue and gold: 'CRAVEN ARMS ... HOLDER'S ALES & STOUT'; the one above the door also features the brewery 'H Ld' monogram. TN's photos in 1974 show that at the time the fascia had modern boards installed. Since then the wonderful gold tiled fascia has been revealed with more Holder's lettering and another monogram. Mitchells & Butlers Ltd, Cape Hill, Smethwick; and Springfield, Wolverhampton Birmingham, 93 Bath Street Gunmakers Arms A Victorian corner pub with M&B livery, including large 'M&B' letter signs affixed to the walls. Formerly an Atkinson's pub. The M&B signs had been removed by 2017. The pub has been taken over by the adjacent Two Towers brewery. WRB photo 2009; SP 2017 Picture

Holt Brewery Co Ltd Birmingham Birmingham, Holt Street Gosta Green Formerly the brewery offices, built and dated 1906. At fascia level on the corner, a Holt squirrel in terracotta. On the south elevation, partly obscured by a modern pub sign and several inserted windows, is a faded painted sign: 'HOLT BREWERY CO LTD ... BREWERS OF (obscured) MALT ALES & STOUTS'. Firkin brewpubs - various locations Birmingham, Kingston Row Flapper & Firkin It's thought that this was a later, non-brewing Firkin, probably receiving its beers from Wolverhampton. It had large letter signs in typical style from the Allied period, including 'FIRKIN BREWERY' at roof level. Renamed 'Flapper'. No evidence of the Firkin brewery remains. Butler's Crown Brewery Ltd Birmingham Erdington, 1 Marsh Lane Royal Oak Internal: the door to the 'SMOKING ROOM' has etched glass. This has a roundel with a crown (trade mark) illustration in the centre, around which is 'BUTLER'S CROWN BREWERY ALES'. This window probably predates the creation of M&B in 1898. Mitchells & Butlers Ltd Smethwick Erdington, Marsh Hill Stockland (Village Green) A fine 1924 pub by Bateman & Bateman for M&B. Five stone pillars around the car park have 'M&B' lettering carved into the sandstone on each side - 20 instances in all. However, most are badly weather-eroded. The pub was converted to a Chinese buffet restaurant in 2006, but has returned to pub use as the 'Village Green'. BHK photo 2006; SP photo 2006 Picture

On the east wall, a faded painted sign: 'RED LION HOTEL' 'HOLT BREWERY ALES'. Inside the main room, a magnificent bar-back incorporated fabulous original etched and gilded mirrors with 'HOLT BREWERY'S ALES', a painted squirrel,and 'TRADE MARK'. SP 2004; SP photo 2010 Picture

Mitchells & Butlers Ltd Smethwick Handsworth, Holyhead Road, corner of Sandwell Road New Inns (former) A 19c pub which was much altered and extended by M&B, becoming one of their flagship pubs. Three carved roundels on the exterior gables: '1885', '1901' and 'M&B'. On the frontage the heads of two pilasters incorporate an 'M&B' monogram, edged by leaves and topped with a crown - an M&B trademark. Converted to flats during the 1990s. Mitchells & Butlers Ltd Smethwick Jewellery Quarter, Albion Street George & Dragon (former) A pub which was closed and derelict for many years, restored in 2012. Over an end door, a damaged example of the M&B 'cube' lantern which was once on almost all of the brewery's pubs. Inside, the very good (but altered) interior features Holt Brewery text in the etched mirrors on the bar-back, and a Holt 'squirrel' on a metal clock. Davenport's Brewery Ltd - formerly John Davenport & Son Brewery Ltd Birmingham Northfield, Bristol Road Black Horse A 'Brewers Tudor' masterpiece, this pub was built for Davenport's Brewery in 1929, and has been well restored by Wetherspoons. Holt Brewery Co Ltd Birmingham Selly Oak, 561 Bristol Road Bournbrook Hotel (Goose at the OVT) The formerly hidden faience tiled fascia has been revealed by restoration. It has two examples of raised lettering 'Holt Brewery Co Ltd'; and in the centre the pub's original name 'BOURNBROOK HOTEL'. Over a door on the right-hand side is a stone or plaster panel with quite a large example of Holt's squirrel in a central oval. SP photo 2011 Picture

At the apex end of the building, a stone roundel at ground floor level features an 'HBC' monogram in relief, and another at high level features a squirrel - the brewery's trademark - in relief. Ansells Brewery Ltd Birmingham Tyburn, Kingsbury Road / Chester Road Tyburn House A large pub designed in 'Cotswold' style by architects Batemans for Ansells in 1930. Above a door, 'Ansells' in script, carved in the stone with vine leaves. On each of five very attractive downpipe heads, 'A' and the date 1930. with a border of hop decoration. Mitchells & Butlers Ltd Smethwick Winson Green, 84 Dudley Road Old Windmill The fascia sign featured two ovals with 'M&B' and the 'deer leaping' image. There were also two M&B lanterns with the 'deer leaping' image. All brewery signs were removed by 2012.
