Tamplin & Sons Ltd - Phoenix Brewery, Brighton Brighton, 1 Arundel Road Bush In 2003, metalwork atop hanging sign - 'TAMPLINS'. By 2006, the metalwork had gone, but the wooden hanging sign was replaced with one that has 'TAMPLINS' painted across its top, unlike its predecessor. Facing Upper Gardner Street, the fascia has white lettering on dark green: 'United ALES and STOUT'. Tamplin & Sons Ltd - Phoenix Brewery, Brighton Brighton, 176 Ditchling Road Jolly Brewer A large panel at high level with mosaic - lettering in shades of gold on a background of shades of blue - 'TAMPLIN'S ALES'. Tiled fascias - dark green lettering on cream - 'TAMPLIN'S ALES. WINES & SPIRITS' on each frontage. Some of the tiles have been replaced with plain pale green ones. Kemp Town Brewery Ltd - Bristol Brewery, Brighton Eastbourne, 14 South Street Dolphin Carved in the woodwork over each of the two front doors, a 'KTB' monogram in a roundel. The leaded windows on the front include dolphins and four shields with 'KTB'. On the left side, a former door has a leaded window incorporating 'KTB' - the lettering facing inwards. Kemp Town Brewery Ltd - Bristol Brewery, Brighton Eastbourne, 57 South Street Eagle On each elevation, a panel at high level. Each has an eagle at each end with a shield 'KTB'. Two dolphins on the fascia of the back extension. SP photo 2006 Picture

Kemp Town Brewery Ltd - Bristol Brewery, Brighton Eastbourne (Old Town), Church Street Tally Ho A superb building, and a cornucopia of Kemp Town features! Dated 1927 on a rainwater head. The main fascia has 'TALLY-HO HOTEL … KEMP TOWN BREWERY' in art nouveau lettering. On the front and side elevations, the Tudor style windows have 'KTB' carved between the arches; some of the leaded windows feature dolphins. On the front bay window: 'KTB' carved in stone above; two 'KTB' monograms in leaded panes in the bay; above two doors each side of the bay, 'KTB' in a shield with dogs each side and a fox's head above. The rear off-sales has: four 'KTB' shields with dolphins; a roundel with 'KTB' above the door; carved timber above the door with 'KTB' in the middle and 'WINE OFFICE' in a band; the fascia has two shields with six martlets. Inside in the rear lobby, a large leaded window with a horseman and 'KTB'. Also has more recent Charrington features: two lanterns and a projecting 'Toby' sign. SP photo 2006 Picture

H B Longhurst & Son - Amber Ale Brewery, London Road, Brighton Hove, 48 Hove Street Connaught This pub was built in 1880. On the north wall is a large stone panel with the remains of painted lettering - 'THE CONNAUGHT HOTEL ... LONGHURST ... FINE AMBER ALES & STOUT'. The sign, particularly the middle line, is difficult to read, and can only be viewed at an acute angle. The Henry Longhurst brewery in Preston Circus, Brighton, was demolished in 1901 to facilitate tramways. The brewery was on the site of the current fire station, and the maltings are now in use as Duke of York cinema. PM 2003; NB 2003; SP photo 2007 Picture

Kemp Town Brewery Ltd - Bristol Brewery, Brighton Hove, 39 Western Road Freemasons A rather anonymous 19c building was transformed in the 1930s, when Kemp Town Brewery installed an amazing and extravagant frontage to the 'Buffet', in copper and mosaic tiling with several references to the brewery and masonic symbols incorporated. There is lettering with 'KEMP TOWN BREWERY'; three 'KTB' monograms; and two dolphins. Inside, there is also a modern wall-mounted mural with dolphins. Kemp Town Brewery Ltd - Bristol Brewery, Brighton Hove, 21 Western Road Western Hotel There are dolphins - the brewery trademark - in the carving of the fascia supports at top of the columns on the front elevation. The pub has had several different names in recent years, but the original name is in mosaic at high level. SP photo 2007 Picture

Various Hove, 63 Western Road Wick Inn The windows incorporate etched glass panels with 'RUDDLES', 'GALES H.S.B.' and 'WEBSTERS ALES'. These beers were regularly sold in part of the Grand Metropolitan estate for a period in a desperate bid to gain credibility. Of course, all three breweries are now defunct. SP photo 2007 Picture

Page & Overton's Brewery Ltd - Shirley Brewery, Croydon Lewes, 91 High Street Brewers Arms Splendid large terracotta plaque to the left of the main entrance: centrally an oval containing 'PAGE AND OVERTON'S CROYDON ALES' surrounded by hops, barley and scrolls. There is a similar plaque the other side of the door with 'THE BREWERS ARMS INN'. On the right of the building are several etched windows with a large letter 'S': this represents Shirley Brewery. Rock Brewery Ltd - Brighton Newhaven, 133 Lewes Road Jolly Boatman Etched Rock Brewery window. In 2003, a Harveys house in derelict condition. 2005: NB reports that the Rock Brewery window has gone. (The local museum (www.newhavenmuseum.co.uk) has a Rock Ales acid etched pane about 4' x 4' on display, from the Crown Inn, Bridge Street.) NC 2003; NB 2005. .
