Not known Burton upon Trent, 104 Grange Street Star & Garter (former) Has two gables each with a stone tablet - one with 'JH', the other with '1878'. Ian Haynes writes: Joseph Haynes appears to be the first landlord of the Star & Garter until his death on 2 September 1885. His wife Mary Ann ran the pub until about 1904-1911 when she presumably sold the pub to Marstons. It's not thought that this was a brewpub. It closed as a pub and was converted to flats by 2017. In 2009, large board signs have been applied to both gables - the Worthington signs may survive beneath. Also, former 'Bass' applied letter signs have been removed from the pub. Worthington & Co Ltd Burton-upon-Trent Burton upon Trent, 50 High Street Blue Posts (renamed Crossing) The site of John Yeomans' Blue Posts Brewery. Following acquisition by Worthingtons, the pub was rebuilt in 1927. The outbuilding at the side of the pub has a large prominent letter sign - black lettering on white - with 'Worthington's Ales.'; similar to those at the Waterloo, Burton and the Olde Flying Horse, Kegworth, Leics (qv). On the northern elevation of the offices, facing a yard, is a doorway with a large triangle in relief in the stonework above. Charrington & Co Burton-upon-Trent Burton upon Trent, Lichfield Street Leopard Mid-19c pub, the former tap to Charrington's Burton brewery, which was adjacent. According to a plaque on the building, it was purchased by Charrington in 1872 and rebuilt in the 'London Style'. Impressive exterior with several stone panels with depressed gold-painted lettering: 'CHARRINGTON'S FINE ALES' at high level on front elevation; two similar panels on the side elevation: 'LONDON STOUT' and 'PALE & BURTON ALES'. Such signs were once ubiquitous, but are now very rare. The style also featured as beer tap cowls and ice boxes on the bar counter! There was also a large 'Bass' sign in script on the laft-hand walls, a Bass lantern, a 'Bass Worthington' slate plaque and an opening hours box. No longer a pub. All signs removed. Charles Hill & Son Burton-upon-Trent Stapenhill, The Dingle Punch Bowl (former) Stone and brick archway at the rear - 'PUNCH BOWL INN ... HILL & SON'S ALES' incised into stone above the gate. This gateway served the pub garden and bowling green, and pre-dated the rebuilding of the pub in the 1930s. The pub has been redeveloped as a care home, but the gateway survives, now part of Stapenhill Gardens. The brewery became Beard Hill and Co Ltd in 1893, and succombed to Marstons in 1900. It also had a beautiful tiled mosaic on the first floor front elevation depicting a Dog & Partridge, but this has been removed. IND COOPE'S ALES'. For several years, this was a Thwaites' pub 'Gray's Corner' with modern fascia boards obscuring the original signs. Closed in 2015, the modern signs had been removed to reveal just 'IND COOPE'S ALES' on the front fascia. The pub has since reopened with a new name, and the original front fascia survives. The shop where it used to hang was once the brewery's retail outlet, the brewery being next door. In the shape of a barrel with a red cross on each face. A plaque on the shop wall records that the clock originally hung outside the brewery and was donated to the town by Bass Worthington. The plaque reads: 'THE ABOVE CLOCK WHICH FORMERLY HUNG OVER THE ENTRANCE TO JOULES BREWERY, STONE, WAS PRESENTED TO THE TOWN BY BASS WORTHINGTON AND RESTORED BY STONE TOWN COUNCIL AS A PERMANENT REMINDER OF THE IMPORTANCE OF THE BREWING INDUSTRY IN STONE FROM THE 12TH CENTURY UNTIL 31ST OCTOBER 1972 WHEN THE LAST BREWERY (JOULES) CLOSED. The design incorporates three instances of the 'red cross' trademark, small letters with 'TRADE MARK' and two Staffordshire Knotts. Each of the five gables feature a red cross in brick; above this is a finial incorporating a red cross. The canalside elevation has five gables with similar features; this elevation also has a large painted sign - white lettering on green - 'Joule's STONE ALES' and two painted red crosses. There are iron gates to the yard with 'Joules' and two red crosses; facing the yard, a gable incorporates decorative brickwork in the shape of a cross.
