Hartleys (Ulverston) Ltd Ulverston Bowness, Lowside Hole Int Wall (New Hall Inn) The sign board on the front of the pub reads: 'NEW HALL INN 1612 ... (HOLE - INT - WALL) ...OLDEST TAVERN IN BOWNESS ... FREQUENTED BY CHARLES DICKENS ... HARTLEY'S FINEST DRAUGHT ALE AS BREWED SINCE 1780 STRAIGHT FROM THE WOOD', a sign which presumably pre-dates the closure of Hartley's Brewery in 1991. The sign board also incorporates a Hartley's 'barrel-end' sign with BREWED ... HARTLEY'S ... TRADITIONALLY'. Applied to the wall of the pub are Robinson's style letter signs with the Hartley's name.
